Rakia is brandy made by distillation of fermented fruits, popular throughout the Balkans. It is considered to be the national drink among south Slavic peoples. Its most common form Slivovitz, is produced from plums. Other commonly used fruits are grapes, apricots, apples, and quinces. Plum and grape rakia are sometimes mixed after distillation with other ingredients, such as herbs, honey, sour cherries and walnuts.

The variety in taste and quality of rakia is further extended by the strong tradition of distilling rakia from the fruit grown in one own’s backyard. A tradition that has continued even in modern times. The claim to the best rakia in town is often a matter of pride and debate among friends and neighbors throughout the region. Another part of the tradition is that a good host always has a bottle of rakia on the main table ready to be served for any occasion.

Our hope is that we can provide similar hospitality to our guests and perhaps start a friendly debate on the merits of each of the rakia served at “our table’.
